Tonian Labs Oriaco G6 // Speakers

Here's a pair of speakers that have earned rave reviews at the audio shows, but are downright impossible to find – the Oriaco G6 from Tonian Labs. Described by their maker as "a BBC design with a twist," that twist involves different damping material with clever placement and tuning of the rear port. The result is superb resolution, great bass, and a clean, neutral midrange from a cabinet only a bit larger than the LS3/5a. The stable impedance of the Oriaco G6 pairs well any amp, especially so for single-ended tube amps. If you haven't yet read the reviews, we can tell you that everyone agrees – this is an audiophile's speaker.

When designer Tony Minasian was asked what the secret was, he was a bit mum as usual, but he finally let on that it's all in the crossover, once you've settled on a decent set of drivers. He also explained that the speakers are what one needs to really get right. Your digital source has distortion in the 10/1000s% and your amp has it in the 10/100s% but your speakers are at 10% (or more) so they need to be as correct as can be. The most amazing thing about these speakers is they'll make you think you're listening with some mega-buck Swiss amp, fed by a SOTA high-res set up. Listening to his Redbook, 16bit recordings through these speakers had us laughing out loud. These speakers could transform any modest system into an excellent sounding one, and that is the point of this hobby, isn't it?
